I have a copy from Ancestry of a Naturalisation Card for an ancestor. It is from May 1883 and says the Record is in Book 4 Cert 2074. How do I organise to get a copy of the certificate and related information? The name is not coming up when I do a RecordSearch. Thank you.
You will need to supply a #1 (at least) the state where the naturalization took place and #2 preferably the name of your ancestor too …
His name was John Blom and the summary card says Sandringham which I think is in Victoria
FYI “SANDRIDGE”( NOT Sandringham!) = Port Melbourne
(Histories of Port Phillip - City of Port Phillip )
I’ve found the following entries for ship carpenter John Blom:
BC=#32722259
Naturalization Index, Victoria (Series A728, Vol#2)
BC=# 32722202
Letter of Naturalization (Series A727 Vol#25):
John should also have had an entry in the series A712 (“Letters received”), i.e. Control Symbol 83/Y4686, but it seems to be missing unlike the other 1883/Y468* files (9 of 10). In the description for this series is mentioned:
“All items in this series in the custody of Australian Archives as at March 1997 have been entered onto the item level database, ANGAM II. There are several items missing, originally inventoried as part of this series in the custody of Australian Archives circa 1970, but not found in the re-arrangement and description of this series in 1997. A list of the missing items appears in the inventory for this series in the reading room. Missing items are also noted as such on their ANGAM II database entries.”
Looking at the other 1883/Y468* files, I’m not sure whether John’s file will have anything extra to tell you and therefore whether it would be worth pursuing it.
Finally, I can’t see any obvious children for this John Blom, so I’m wondering whether you are looking for John William Blom in Camperdown instead.
Thank you for these comments, yes it is in fact John William Blom from Camperdown who I am related to. Someone on ANCESTRY had this attached to him and the reason I was trying to follow up was to see if it was in fact John William Blom. I also searched NAA for John William Blom but no results. I also tried William Blom as that is what is recorded on his death Certificate. I’ll just have to keep researching!! Thank you again.
