Hi, I’m looking to find records that my mum was made a ward of the state. Having a full blood mother and white father she was taken away. I have tried through NAA but not with all details. She was in st Mary’s home AliceSprings from 1953 to 1963. Other than books and notes taken from mums family, I can’t find any proof that her white father put her in the home and didn’t want anything to do with her. Where do I go now. She was Peggy butcher born 3/01/1945, bing bong, Robinson river, Borroloola.
Hi Tanya,
The National Archives holds many records about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory, but we don’t hold records on everyone. There’s guidance on how to get started looking for records here: Find records relating to First Australians | naa.gov.au
We have a specific search tool designed to help find records of First Australians called the Bringing Them Home name index. This index isn’t publicly available, but our staff can search it for you.
If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, please submit an inquiry using the form here: BTH inquiry - RefTracker (naa.gov.au)
Regards,
Jessie
