Can I search for RAAF enlistments from a particular city/town?
Answering my own question.
In name search, type the town name, in the category of records select Air Force Personnel and enter. My search found 969 entries for people born in my town, however some were duplicated so the true figure was probably 700 odd. The search results will not be sorted alphabetically but by clicking the blue field “Item Title”, they will be sorted. If you want to print or save the list, change the number of entries per page to 200 (maximum) then hold SHIFT and right click the blue field “select” to select all entries. Then right click “select” to print or save. Repeat for every page until the whole list is printed/saved.
I ended up with 5 files each of 18 pages (200 names per page) with the last page being 169 names. I am yet to work out how to combine the 5 files into 1. Any ideas?
The DVA WW2 Nominal Roll includes data for place of birth, locality on enlistment and place of enlistment. Those fields are searchable - if you select WW2 on the Web page, under the sidebar menu is the option for Place Search . Select RAAF, within Australia, and enter your place. It will return columns for each of the fields I mentioned. It automatically does a wildcard search, and searches the whole fields - so typing “bris” will give everything that has a word starting with that, incl “East brisbane”, for example. You cannot extract data in bulk, but you can scrape data off the pages into, say, a spreadsheet.
