I can’t find any immigration record of
a Hugh Mckee who emigrated to Australia
in 1921. He married Peggy Peace in 1925
and died in 1933 in Balmain, sadly, by suicide
They lived at 37 Curtis Road, Balmain.
His death certificate states he had been in
Australia for 12 years which is why I assume
he immigrated in 1921
You haven’t supplied much background information, so you need to confirm that the following is the right guy. FYI His birth date seems to change a bit and there are more men with the same name:
Hugh McKee - birth registration Q3 1883 in district West Derby, Lancashire.
Son of Robert McKee and Sarah Annie Cameron
In 1911 he’s a coachman and living with mum, 2 siblings and nephew (Robert Ayre) in 38 Eldon Street, Birkenhead
In 1921 mum Sarah is living with grandson Robert in 12 Camperdown Street, Birkenhead.
In Sep 1919 he seems to have been issued a (UK) First World War Mercantile Marine Ribbon (cert#359191), so somewhere between 1911 and 1918, he’s become a merchant seaman. It isn’t clear whether he was still in the UK in 1919.
FYI Findmypast has a set called “Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1918-1941”. Hugh seems to have a record in that set, but I can’t tell you what it contains as I haven’t had time to view it in the library.
At the end of 1923 Hugh signs up as an AB seaman on the Saros in Newcastle (Australia)… He’s become a lot younger with 1889 as his birth year, but his contact is his mother in 12 Camperdown Street, Birkenhead, so he’s definitely the same person. The first mention in the agreement and log is: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/scripts/AutoSearch.asp?O=ID&Number=8558259&i=4(#9).
He’s mentioned multiple times in this document with most of it related to Hugh refusing to honour his contract. This 1924 case is also mentioned a number of times in the newspapers, so I assume that you already know about it?
His Seamen’s register card starting in Jun 1922: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/NAAMedia/ShowImage.aspx?B=3452916&T=P&S=1145
FYI I could be wrong, but I suspect that you will not find an immigration record for him as most likely he arrived as a ship’s crew member.
