Access to records under the Archives Act 1983

The Archives Act 1983 governs access to Commonwealth archival records.

Under the Act you can access most Commonwealth records in the open access period.

Records enter the open access period 20 years after they are created. Cabinet notebook enter the open access period 30 years after they are created, and census records, 99 years after creation.

When a record is requested by a member of the public, National Archives staff examine the record for any sensitivities and make a decision on its release.
