Control symbol VMBX123741-01

Hi all,

This file hasn’t been examined yet but I was wondering what does the control symbol VMBX refer to? Thanks.

Control symbol VMBX123741-01 is part of series B26.

The B26 series note contains "VMX" file: V=Victoria, M=Medical file also MB=Medical Beneficiary, X=War Code for World War II

See: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/scripts/AutoSearch.asp?Number=B26

Thank you! Would the number 123741 refer to a relative (for example, husband) or is it specific for the person in question, ie Dorothy J Webb?

I could be wrong but it looks like the next available number would have been given to a veteran’s (or his/her dependant) personal case file and then an appropriate code was tacked onto the front of it.

I’m wondering whether the name (= The Current Owner?) on that file and that code could have changed thru time depending on the relevant circumstances e.g. from MX or VMX to VMBX. The file might have been moved between the various series as well.

Thanks again! It sounds more complicated than I thought :upside_down_face: I couldn’f find any other file mentioning her name. There is no file VX123741. The files immediately before and after it seem to be of people enlisted in Werribee and Bendigo, respectively.

One last question. What does ‘date of decision’ mean? In this case it’s 1900 ???

If you check some of the series listed on B26’s description, you’ll notice that not every veteran case file series is on RecordSearch. This might explain why you can’t find more on the (probable) widow and the actual veteran linked to the Victorian file number 123741.
e.g.B33 (Nominal Index cards for veterans case files, alphabetical series – Victoria) … FYI It is useful to read the description for B33 especially regarding numbering as it seems to confirm what I’d already mentioned.

VMBX123741-01 mentions “This item is not currently available for public access. We are unable to provide an online copy for public viewing in RecordSearch until we have examined it for possible sensitivities”. I suspect that the date of decision has been left blank, but that the software behind it has defaulted this field to 1 Jan 1900 i.e. a valid date format.

FYI

An (Victorian) MX version of that file number is mentioned in the veteran’s WW2 file:
