I am looking for any information on Edward B Hopewell and his wife Shirley or children. He arrived in Australia with four of his children on the "New Australia" in 1957. I believe they went on to have two more children. Any information would be useful. Thank you. Judith Guy
Judith, Do you know what state they went to?
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth Thank you for your interest. I am afraid I know nothing except he came to Australia and his children are still there. He was my godfather.
Judith, I have found their arrival on the ship New Australia which left Southampton on 16th August, 1957 and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria
On board were Edward B Hopewell born 23rd Sept. 1916 - occupation Clerk and his wife Shirley H Hopewell born 21st February, 1930 - occupation Housewife
With them is a son Tom E aged about 4 years
They are not showing up in the Electoral Rolls but I will see if I can find anything in the Victorian Records for them
Elizabeth
Judith, I have found a death in South Australia which might be him (needs to be confirmed)
It is for an Edward Bretland (Ted) HOPEWELL who died in 2002 in South Australia
Do you think this might be him?
Elizabeth
Judith, I found the above Edward Bretland HOPEWELL was born in 1916 in England and his birth was registered in Basford which is between Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire - it is possible that his mothers maiden name might have been Bretland? I can check further if needed
Elizabeth
Judith,
Death notice from the Adelaide Advertiser (South Australia) dated 4th March, 2002 (RYERSON INDEX)
Edward Bretland HOPEWELL died on 2nd March, 2002 aged 85 years at Alwyndor Nursing Home
It is possible that his wife Shirley may be still living as she was a lot younger than him I can try & find his burial place if you need it You could also check the online phone directories for the son Tom Elizabeth |
Judith, Apologies for all these messages but I have found his burial place
It is at North Brighton Cemetery, Brighton Road, Glenelg, South Australia
You can obtain a photo from this site if needed
http://headstones.gravesecrets.net/brighton---north-brighton.html
another site I found for the same cemetery states his wife was Shirley Ursula - so looks like the Shirley H on the immigration record should read Shirley U instead
Hope this helps a bit
Elizabeth
You might be able to make contact through this site with Edwards daughter in South Australia - found this message while doing a google search
