Steven & Frances (nee Franelich) Copenech

Could someone advise on the origin of this surname. I believe it is of Croatian, German origin. My g'grandfather Friedrich Copenech (son)is said to have been born in Fiume around 1860 and came to Australia around the mid 1880's. All I have is reference to his time (1914....) in an enemy alien camp in Liverpool, NSW. How can I access more information about this time served. I believe he worked on the Sydney wharves before his internment. Also, how to I find reference to those who came to Australia as seamen, were not naturalised but remained a citizen of Australia etc. Any information would be appreciated with thanks.

Colleen,  There is a photo of a Friedrich COPENECH on this site if you havnt already seen it

www.naa.gov.au - go into record search & put in the surname and then click on view digital image

I am assuming this is  your ggrandfather?

If he was not naturalized you cannot check that record

You could contact the war memorial www.awm.gov.au as they are very helpful
