Hi All,

Looking for any information relating to Maxwell Charles Creighton, born in Carlton Victoria on 16th September 1921.

This information has come from an extract from his birth certificate. As an orphan we have no other information on him.

BD&M does not have a record of this name.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards Ross Creighton

Hi Ross,

As they is fairly straightforward to find, I assume you’ve got Maxwell's details regarding WW2/Marriage/Death etc

You mentioned that you’ve got an extract from his birth certificate, so you know who his parents are and I assume that you know when/where they died as you mentioned that he was an orphan. (FYI the VIC BDM index displays births > 100 years, so Maxwell won't appear until September 2021)

So, what other information are you still looking for?

Hi Sylvia,

Thank you for your interest in my Father, yes l have an extract of my dads birth certificate but it does not show parents names at all, have today spoken to Find and Connect, but it directed me to their NSW office as l am in Sydney, l was given the phone number for the Victorian office which l will ring tomorrow.

Didn't know about the 100 year issue, that maybe l can follow up next year.

Again thank you for your help and any advice going forward

Regards Ross

I'm a bit confused. If you have an extract of his birth cert, why are you looking for him in the VIC BDM index as well? The information should not change. And I'm a bit intrigued re the missing parents. That sounds like a foundling to me.

I did see a birth confirmation from the children’s welfare department in his WW2 file, but of course that is not a birth extract ...

Your confused, that's a joke reply, no offense intended. I am new at this research and as my father (as we were told) we only know of his first life when he was takin into foster care at around age 14, so nothing prior to that, so that is why l decided to try BDM and found nothing, and as mentioned no mention on the extract of the birth cert of parents names. It could be that even id name is not correct as in "Maxwell Charles Creighton" could be a name given to him at birth or some time after that, we just don't know.

I didn't get a chance today to ring Find and Connect, and this also could be a dead end as the information about his foster care is a bit scratchy as well.

At my dad funeral l was approach by a man and he introduced himself as Harry Portter and he told me he was dads step brother, but unfortunately l did not get to speak to him again. On dads army records it list Harry Portter as his step brother as well, and the foster family as Mrs. Portter, and l'm guessing both are no longer with us.

If you have any suggestion on where to go from here would be grateful and thank you

Harry Port(t)er ... again that name. He was your dad's best man in 1946 (with one 't'): https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/204951303. (His step parents are now listed as the Wrights of Broadmeadows)

And, what is this thing with "Maxwell Charles" and "Maxwell William". He seems to be using it in turns :-)

BTW you still haven't clarified whether you have a true extract of his birth certificate or whether it is that birth confirmation from the children’s welfare department ?

- I believe that Harry is Harry (#3) Hardcastle Porter (Sep 1923 – Jan 2010).
- Harry #3 was the son of Harry (#2) Hardcastle Porter (1893-1971; X1922). Harry #2 married Jean Balfour Thom(p)son in 1922.
- And, Harry #2 was the son of a another Harry (#1) Hardcastle Porter (abt 1866-1933) who was married to a Johanna Weilant (abt 1869-26 Apr 1956, last residence Ripponlea ).
(I hope you are still able to follow the Harry’s)

In the late 30’s Harry #2, a store keeper was living in Fawkner st, Broadmeadows with his wife Jean, but in 1942 we can find Harry (#2?) and Jean living at 9 Oak Grove, Ripponlea/St Kilda (occ: driver). It seems that Jean was the “J Porter” on Maxwell’s WW2 file, although there is a very small chance that it could have been Johanna Porter.
