Gerald,  You don't mention what state he lived in which would help

There is a  birth in Victoria that might be him but it was not in the 1860's

If you think this might be him I can check further

thank you Elizabeth Allen, the HARRIE LEWIS STEPHENSON seems like my g/father.  dad was raised by H L S from a baby, dads birth name was FREDERICK CHARLES PURCELL his birth parents were, FREDERICK JOSEPH PURCELL and ELIZABETH MAY HOCKING all from vic'.  its seems my g/mother, ELIZABETH MAY PURCELL left FJ P when dad was a baby as H L STEPHENSON filed eliabeths death certificate and stated he was dads father.  I know nothing about H L S and would be really grateful for your. regards Gerald

Gerald,  You need to apply to the Victorian BDM registry to get a copy of his death certificates

If you want to do it the cheap way you can download an image of the handwritten record online and the 2nd option you get a certificate
