Finding my father Edward Keith Hawke THOMAS born 1924 in Reading, England.

I am trying to trace my father EDWARD KEITH HAWKE THOMAS born in 1924 (Reading, Berkshire) who was in the UK Royal Navy during WW2. He absented himself from HMS Golden Hind in Sydney Australia around September 1946.  He married my mother in July 1943 in Reading, Berkshire.  I was born in 1944.  I am not aware that he returned to this country but his mother and maybe other family may have still been here although I haven't been able to trace her. He may well be deceased now but could have married over in Australia and had more children.  My mother was divorced from him in December 1951.

Thanks for looking at all of this.  The 34 is the number of the road. We know absolutely nothing about Pat's father from anyone and have tried asking the remaining relatives on his mother's side to no avail.  Can't think that his mother (Catherine) if she was alive would not have been at his wedding and it is all around the same area.

Didn't get far when I tried to search for nurses but I get a bit bogged down with how to get to the basic information.

The census I have (which is probably completely unrelated) reads

HEAD of family -  ILTYD THOMAS Age 40,  Married 12 years, Grocer,  Employer, Born Sketty, Swansea

Jane Thomas Wife             35   Born Beddgelert, North Wales

Jane Thomas Daughter      9    Born St. John's Wood

Catherine Thomas              5    Born St. John's Wood

Living at  1 Henry Street,  St John's Wood, NW

Please bear in mind that I have no other experience of searching other than for our family so this may be complete nonsense as far as Pat's Grandmother is concerned.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Pat/Sue,

Here is that link: . I’ve had a look at the links on Ancestry where my main focus was on nurses who had a connection to Reading or London.

I could only find one usable link for Reading:

Register of nurses for 1928 (General Part)

Reg no: 39374

Name: Thomas, Catherine

Permanent Address (= seems to be the 1928 work location): Garnedd, Llanarmon, Chwilog, Wales

Date and Place of Registration: Sept 18, 1925, London

Qualifications: Cert. 1920-1924, Royal Berkshire Hosp., Reading

Some other possibilities in London:

- Catherine Elizabeth Thomas who did her 1922-1925 training in Southwark Hosp, London. In 1928, 1937 and 1946 she was working in Ammanford, Wales.

- Catherine Ellinor Thomas (abt 1893-1944)  who worked in Tooting, London (St Georges?) for many years. She’d done her 1917-1920 training at Bethlem’s. It turns out that she had married her husband George William Sinden (also nurse) late 1923. Of course this marriage does not rule her out 100%, but It makes her a very unlikely candidate.

Finally your Catherine Thomas from St John’s Wood::

I believe that she is Catherine Alice Thomas b abt 1905 (reg Q#4 1905  in ST MARYLEBONE) daughter of Iltyd/Iltid Thomas (1870 - ?1946) and Jane Jones. (Her sister seems to be Jane Marian b abt 1902, reg Q#1 1901 ST MARYLEBONE).

My gut feeling is that she’s a bit too young to be a candidate and I cannot find her amongst the other nurses, but I suppose anything is possible.

Rgds, Sylvia

Hi Sylvia

Many thanks for taking the time to do all this research.  Catherine has only used the one name although of course she may have had a second forename.  There are so many of the same name when I go through the BDM site. Don't know why she would have lived in Cricklewood if training in Reading.  I'll try to do some more digging and will let you know if anything turns up.  So many unknowns.

Once again, thanks so much for this information.
