Hi Everyone,

I am going to make myself look like a fool here but my stepmother has asked me look into a relative who left Southampton on the 8/7/1961 on the Fairsky.

My question is I have found the record for a Brenda Mary Anne McDonnell with a series  number of A1877 and a barcode of 7325814 and location of Canberra, but does the location mean that she settled in Canberra or that the record is in Canberra?

Another question if you do not mind...but what can I now do with this information to actually try and track down this lady for my stepmother?

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Mark,

The reference means the records are held in Canberra.  Your problem is that with our privacy laws it is reasonably difficult to trace someone that recently.  I can't look at passenger lists to see where she disembarked as they only go to 1960. Of course your other problem is that being a young single woman it is highly likely that she married and changed her surname.

The indexed record for her is her migrant selection documents and I don't know that they would be of any use in finding where she disembarked and originally settled.  Not all items are yet indexed - have a look here at how to access immigration documents http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/migration/home.aspx  and perhaps if you lodge a request (scroll down to 'What if I can't find the record I want?') stating that you are only interested in finding any details after her arrival.  Your best bet may be naturalisation records.

I can see 3 different women on the 1977/1980 electoral rolls (not all states are covered) with the same combination of first names so I will have a look around and see if I can find anything more about them.

Do you know if she had a particular occupation?

Hi Debra,

Thank you for replying to my post. It is appreciated. I appreciate the advice and the effort you are making as to be quite honest I was a little lost on where to go next and that is embarrassing as I am currently studying writing and publishing and research plays a large part of the program!

As for Brenda's occupation apparently she was a secretary for either MI6 or MI5, my stepmother is not quite sure which one.

Thank you once again and I will lodge a request as you have suggested.

I know this is a very late response, but I know Brenda very well.
