Firstly, I am interested in any information about Andrew Howard Garven who was a Guardian of Minors in 1913. My research thus far has led me to believe that he was in fact the Guardian for Aboriginal children in the Clarence River district of NSW. My interest is in any records he would have had to have kept in regards to these children and if anyone could advise me on where I would need to go to access these records.

Secondly, I know that my Grandmother was fostered by a family call Davis who lived in McLean, NSW. Can anyone advise how or even if records of Foster families were kept in the early to mid 1900's.

I would be very appreciative of any information given as I am at a very frustrating place in my research.

Many thanks

Carol,   This appears to be the correct Andrew

There were different forms of fostering - could be through a church organization or a private arrangement - not sure if State run foster care was an option in those days but shouldn't be too difficult to find out

You could try contact the State Archives of NSW for advice regarding fostering records if they exist - was your Grandmother aboriginal?

Hi Elizabeth. Yes, we are pretty sure that Gran was part aboriginal her mother was definitely white and her being a ward of the state under Andrew Garven suggests that she was on an aboriginal reserve. I will contact the Archives in regard to fostering records. Many thanks
