Hi Shirley,

You really need to give some dates here - approximate birth dates and year of arrival.

Cheers,

Debra

Hi Shirley

The National Archives of Australia is the archive of the Commonwealth of Australia, and our records date predominantly from Federation in 1901.  Our passenger lists start mainly from 1924 when the customs function transferred from the States to the Commonwealth.  In addition, you need to have fairly precise dates as it is not possible to search over large periods of time as they have not been indexed.  That said, we do have a partial index of ships arriving in Fremantle WA (ships arriving in Australia from Europe usually travelled through Fremantle on their way to the Eastern states).  You could do a search for a possible mention of him and his family, if they arrived in Australia between 1921 and 1949.  To get to the index, go to naa.gov.au, click on the 'Search the collection' button on the right hand side of the screen, click on 'Search as a guest' and then click on the green 'Passenger arrivals index' tab on the far right hand side of the screen.  You should be able to conduct a search from there.

Otherwise, you may have some luch searching for records using the UK National Archives website Ancestors Onboard at www.ancestorsonboard.com, which is an index of all passengers leaving the UK from 1890 to 1960.

The UK National Archives provides some useful assistance for looking for information about people at their website www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/default.htm.  This might be a useful start.  In addition, you may like to see our fact sheet on how to begin your family history research www.naa.gov.au/collection/fact-sheets/fs200.aspx and our fact sheet on the kinds of information we hold on migrants from the UK www.naa.gov.au/collection/fact-sheets/fs123.aspx.  You may also like to start with our 'Family history - Begin your Journey' webpage at www.naa.gov.au/collection/family-history/index.aspx.

Kind regards

Tonia
