Not sure if this is your message or not but it states a different birth year and also his place of birth

I cannot find any immigration for him or a naturalisation record

Have you purchased his death certificate as that might have more information - if he married here a copy of his marriage cert might have his birthplace (no guarantees)

Jennifer,  You might find he arrived in Victoria but his immigration may be under an incorrect spelling

I found the birth of two of his children in Victoria which are under LACHATEL - his death is not showing up in Queensland under any of the spelling variations of his name

Do you know where he married Bridget?

Jennifer,  Never mind I have found the marriage in Sydney NSW - also under LACHATEL so possibly he arrived in NSW before going to Victoria and then to Queensland

It is also possible that he worked his passage as a crew member so wouldn't be on any passenger list - either that or he is one of the unnamed steerage passengers who arrived - another possible is that his arrival is under yet another variations of his surname  - maybe another member of this forum can find his arrival for you

Jennifer,  I found his death under another slight variation

Louis LaChatel  died 25th July, 1862 - no parents names llisted

Registration No. B000827

Queensland BDM Index

I believe B prefix is for Brisbane area but he is not showing up in the Brisbane Cemeteries search

I doesn't appear that whoever registered his death knew much about him

sorry about all these messages - just trying to find something for you

-Thank you so very much. This is more than I have received before Elizabeth. What would be your best bet for correct spelling? I think there is a web page that will let you search all the departments but I could not work the page!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never knew his death said LaChatel. That sounds more French. If I could only find the department he lived before coming to Australia.

many many thanks Jenny

Jennifer,  Not sure what you mean about the web page to search all the departments - do you have a link to it?

Some sites you can do wildcard searches and with a name like this there can be several variations in different records i.e.  the name might show up as Louis La CHATEL

I will see if I can find anything else for you regarding his arrival - didn't have any luck yesterday but will recheck

Jennifer,   Still no luck with any immigration record for Louis unfortunately

Have you seen the family tree online on Ancestry.com?  It states that Louis was born in VERRIENS, in France

I have now also found the birth of daughter Mary Jane in Sydney - listed under LACHATEL - there is also further info on that tree if you need it about his childrens births/deaths

Hi Jenny,

No real answer, but it seems that there is no place called “VERRIENS” in France.

I saw a suggestion that it could be Varennes-en-Argonne. Therefore I checked the “Tables décennales des Naissances” (10 year birth tables) 1823-1832 and 1833-1842 for surnames starting with c/l/s, but it seems no one was born with anything that comes close to Lachatel in Varennes-en-Argonne!!! There are loads more places called “Varennes” around the country, so maybe someone had chosen the wrong one. Unfortunately there are too many to check.

A close option seems to be “Verrines”, so I had a look at the available “Naissances” and “Tables décennales des Naissances” for 2 Verrines , but no luck here either.

lThank you all so very much. I have given up on the Verriens place, does not exist. Have his 3 childrens births etc.I did have someone tell me there were a lot of people with similar name around Normandy, but I don't know how to search it.

Father was Auguste  Lashtel. Now you would think something would turn up. mother Eugene Jvernois. If I could find her unusual name might help.

I can only thing his accent must have been very FRENCH and we aussies were lost with what he was saying?
