What are the negatives contained in some WW2 files.  Are they photo negatives of the person and are they available to purchase as a photograph?   Appreciate your help - Sharon

Hello Sharon

I apologise for the delay in responding to your posting.  The negatives in the files are photo negs of the service person and usually include a face forward portrait and a side-facing profile.  You can purchase a digital copy of the service record of the person you are interested in, and a low-resolution copy of the photocopy will be produced as part of copying the file.  To do this, follow the steps outlined in http://forum.naa.gov.au/forum/topics/purchasing-digital-copies-onli

If you would like a high resolution copy of the photograph, you can purchase this by filling in the form at http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/Images/PhotoSearch/NAA_photo_order_f... and posting it to the address on the form (or you can scan and email to ref@naa.gov.au).  Please note on the form whether you would like a copy of the forward facing portrait or the side profile.  If you would like both photographs, you will need to pay for two images.

Please let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Hi Tonia,

A family member did purchase the file but I'm not sure if it was digital or "paper".   It did not include a photograph.  The file is open for view and I can see there is a negative amongst the file.   I was wondering if the negative wasn't any good and may not have been able to be developed.   Does this happen?

Appreciate your opinion on whether to go ahead and purchase a high resolution copy, not knowing if the negative is in good condition.  I did try enlarging the negative image and facial features are blank, almost like a piece of sticky tape was put across and ripped off.  I can only see one negative in the file but there may be others underneath.

If you apply for the photograph but the negative is no good would you be informed of that and refunded.

Thankyou for your help so far,

Sharon

Hi Sharon

I can look into it further for you. Could you please let me know the name of the service man and I'll get back to you.

Many thanks for your help Tonia.

I've asked the section of the Archives that handles the copying of records to let me know whether there is an image on the negatives.  As we are now coming into the Christmas/New Year period, the number of staff available to check the record is low and I may not be able to get back to you until in the New Year.

Thanks

Tonia

That's OK Tonia - Hope the New Year brings some good news!

Thanks so much for your help,

Happy Christmas,

Sharon

Hi Sharon

I've just heard from our copying service that they currently do not have the staff to check this item.  However, they assure me that it is most probable that there is a useable image on both of the negatives. In the unlikely event that they cannot reproduce the image, you will be given a refund. In very few cases the image may be of an x-ray, in which case you would also be given a refund.

Tonia

Hi Tonia,

Thankyou for helping me with this matter.  I will make an application now that I know the situation.

All the best for the coming year,

Sharon
