Hello everyone

I am trying to find my Great Uncles service record. I have his service number but he enlisted under another name. Unfortunately, I don't know the name he used when he enlisted. Does anyone know how I can search with just the service number?

Thanks in advance

Deb,   You could try searching this AIF project site using just the service number and then go through them to see if other details match your William Patrick CAHILL

https://www.aif.adfa.edu.au/index.html

you could try the same things with the Australian War Memorial putting in the service number and clicking on 'people' then going through the subsequent list that comes up

There is one William Patrick CAHILL listed but this could well be another person if you are sure he enlisted under another name

Thanks for your help, Elizabeth. The situation now is even more confusing. Walter Stores enlisted as William Patrick Cahill, not the other way round. The only other William Patrick Cahill was k.i.a so not my great uncle either. The mystery continues!

Cheers

The AIF Project also has a list of known aliases here:

There is a William CAHILL there.

You say you have his service number - what is it?  Where and when was William born?  Did he marry?
