Convicts weren't kept in a prison,  they were assigned out to settlers or the government to work.

Your Charles was an exile which means that he had served a part of his sentence in England and considered worthy of a ticket of leave (similar to parole) or a pardon on arrival.  He didn't land in Tasmania but went to Port Philip in Victoria and was assigned as a farm servant to John Harlin at Glenvale for six months.

You can read an article about the exile system here  https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/37129238  or just Google.

Some records that you can look at are digitised on the website of the Public Records Office of Victoria (PROV).  Some are not indexed so you will need to browse them yourself.

Many thanks Debra thats a lttle bit more of his history.   I found his passage there but today i am going to trace after his 6 months spent working for John Harlin.

I am finding the Australian records a bit more difficult to follow, but i am sure I will eventually work it out.

I must try and make a list of queries that i have to do starting with -did he survive 10 years in jail  and where did he go.

Right Debra I  feel as though I am talking to you about what I must try and do

Take care and many thanks for you help

Eddie

Hi all stuck again,it seems that convict Charles Wride spent a few months working for Mr Harlin of Glenvale.

The ship (Marion) docked at Port Phillip Victoria,I found Port Phillip Bay on the map and it looks huge.

My question is where did Charles go to after the 6 months woking for Mr Harlin. Did he go to work else where in australia or was he sent to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania ) to work.

The paper trail of Charles is hard to follow as I find the archives difficult.

I would be very grateful if some one can help me with what he did

may thanks Edwiin

Hi Syylvia many thanks for your reply ,it has given me   a link ( i am hoping)

Chales wride was transported from England to Ausralia and had been sent to Van diemans Land (Tasmania)

a short time later he was sent with 3 other convicts to work for a Mr Harlin of Glenvale Queens land for 6 months

It seems it has a high possibilty of being charles wride.

I will try to find out in the newspapers wether any mention has been made about him, i need to find out about the outcome of his trial. (I am useless at Newspapers but I will give it a go)  If its not too much to ask would you help me look at newspapers to see if there is any previous crimes mentioned.

Many thanks for your help

Edwin

Hey all stuck again,it appears that convict Charles Wride spent a couple of months working for Mr Harlin of Glenvale.

The ship (Marion) docked at Port Phillip Victoria,I discovered Port Phillip Bay on the guide and it looks immense.

My inquiry is the place did Charles go to after the a half year woking for Mr Harlin. Did he go to work else where in australia or was he sent to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania ) to work.

The paper trail of Charles is difficult to take after as I discover the chronicles troublesome.

I would be extremely thankful if somebody can help me with what he did
