I have been researching my family for a little while and have found my great grandfather's records. I have also found his brother's records. There is, however, a small problem. I need some help in understanding one thing. How can two servicemen end up with the same service number? My great-uncle had the number first (he enlisted about 4 weeks prior), whilst the other gentleman was originally given a different number before having it crossed out and replaced with the same number as my uncle. Can someone help with me to understand as I was under the assumption that once you were given a Service number, it was yours for life
