I am trying to get information about my cousin, Mario Agostini who emigrated to Australia possibly in the 1960's from Italy. I believe he was born in the late 1930's or early 1940's. He passed away sometime within the last 20 years in Australia, so to find any additional information, especially his date of death would be helpful. Thank you.
It is possible that your cousin migrated to Australia as part of an assisted migration scheme. If he did, the National Archives of Australia may have his migrant selection documents. We should also have passenger records relating to his arrival in Australia. He may have applied to become a naturalised Australian, in which case, we may have his application for naturalisation. If you would like to follow any of these leads, I recommend you submit a reference inquiry using the online form at http://reftracker.naa.gov.au/reft100.aspx?key=03ImmiRef. A reference officer will search the collection on your behalf and let you know what they find. Please provide as much information as you possibly can, so we can differentiate your cousin from someone else who may have the same name.
Regarding his death, you could search the Ryerson Index at http://www.ryersonindex.org/. This is an index of death notices appearing in current some Australian newspapers, especially in NSW. It also includes some funeral notices, probate notices and obituaries. Alternatively, if you know where he lived in Australia (which you may be able to find out in some of the immigration record above) you may be able to find out information about his death from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state where he lived. However, I don’t think you would be able to obtain a death certificate, as his death is only within the last 20 years. Websites for each of the BDM registries in Australia can be found at http://australia.gov.au/topics/law-and-justice/births-deaths-and-ma... . You may also be able to find information about your cousin on the National Library of Australia’s Trove – trove.nla.gov.au.
Best of luck in your search
