Researching Geoff Valentin for a social history set in the St George District ( Sydney). Trying to access the service record for Valentin, who was a champion swimmer on cusp of national titled when he was conscripted to CMF ( date not known) and inducted into Western Sydney 55/53 - Valentin was posted to PNG, ( not sure of dates ), repatriated Sydney 1943 ( malaria), returned to Bougainvile, KIA.

I am looking for the chronology that informs on his war service - his service records- as he progressed from NCO to Lieutenant - and the periods of his activity in the 55/53. At this stage all I can find is the are records of his death recorded in the cemetery.

Dan,  You can request his record for a fee via the NAA Record Search

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScr...

just put his name into the above search box

His Nominal Roll record on this link

Thank you Elizabeth. Someone from the National Archives has been in touch, and this is progressing along. Many thanks for these links which I will look at with interest.

Dan,  That is great news - I hope it all goes well

The NAA has a Personnel Dossier for Geoffrey Valentin (NX167542). The Access Status is "Open",  but it hasn't been scanned yet. Therefore it seems that there are 3 choices:

- Pay to have it scanned (probably abt $36 - you'll need to check))

- Physically view it in Canberra (You'll need to check first for availability!)

- Wait until the NAA gets round to scanning it

Thank you for your reply. Someone has called me on this today and will be looking in the file. I expect some wonderful things to emerge, or at least a few holes to be filled in. Geoff Valentin's story is of paying the ultimate price, paid on VE Day ( PNG 9 May 45)- a great repudiation of the label "that mob" which was given to his battalion when they first met the Japanese defending Pt Moresby in '42.
