I am trying to find a list of all the passengers that were on board one of the "War Bride Ships" that sailed into Brisbane in October 1945, it was the Mastonia. A search of the National Archives failed to find a record, yet I have a photo of her and her son. The lady in question is Mrs. R. Sprague and her sone Reginald. Where can I obtain a list of the passengers so I can search. Also where do I find details of the journey?

Hi Bruce,

The correct spelling of the ship's name is MATSONIA.

There are lots of news articles at http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?l-decade=194&l-year=19...

Perhaps this is the photo you already have http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/12148816?searchTerm=matsoni...|||l-year=1945

There are a number of catalogue entries for women arriving on the Matsonia in 1945, but no SPRAGUE, so it is likely that not all entries are online.

Just go here http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/migration/home.aspx  and scroll down to "What if I can't find the record I want" for details on how to request a search.

Thanks for your help. what I am trying to track down is an actual passenger list. The reason is, because technically she was not Mrs R. Sprague. There is a bit to the story, but she actually did not marry Reginald Sprague until she arrived in Australia and they married in Melbourne on the 25th October. I figure if I can look through the passenger list, I may be able to work out what name she traveled under.

Hi Bruce,

I think that probably most of them were unmarried when they arrived.  I don't see anything for her either (including her nickname), but I think that the only records that appear on RecordSearch for the ship are the statements and declarations of aliens for the American women.  She was Canadian so I think wasn't considered to be an alien in Australia.

These are likely to be the records you need:

Title: Marriages Repatriation of Wives of Servicemen. List of dependants of Servicemen sailing on Matsonia from San Francisco.

Title: S.S. "Matsonia" - List of dependents of Australian Servicemen Leaving San Francisco 6-10-45

Contents Date Range: 1945-1945

You can do a search in "Advanced Search" for the Item Barcodes which are 189269 and 1966297 and then "Request a Copy".

Hi Bruce

If you wish, you can submit a request for a copy of the passenger list using our online reference inquiry form at http://reftracker.naa.gov.au/reft100.aspx?pmi=UaL2jquPO0
