Can someone please assist me in how I would go about finding my cousin? She was not born in Australia but came to Australia some time in the 1990's. I have her maiden name, what high school she went to but I don't know where to start a search as she most likely has changed her family name resulting from marriage. She use to live with our family when she first came to Australia so I may have a former address but due to conflict on my fathers side, everyone has either died, senile or will not assist. She has most likely moved around at least 2 other states aside from NSW where she initially was placed. Any assistance on where I begin would be appreciated.
If she is naturalised, you could try tracking her in the electoral rolls. I'm not sure whether every electoral office has copies for the whole country and some places seem to have restrictions regarding the material you can research, but you could give them a ring before you visit. Unfortunately visits don't seem to be allowed at the moment because of covid-19. State libraries could be another option (check first).
And of course there are options like Facebook and Google searches.
If none of this works and it is something that is really important to you, I suppose you could pay a professional like a private investigator, but that would not be cheap.
Thanks so much for your help. Electoral rolls seem to be limited search to current details only, not historic. Well that was the online version any way. Will check out state library when I get a chance but I am not sure what I will be looking for. Facebook & google were my first point of call - no luck.
Again, thank you for your assistance - if i need to go down the route of a PI - will definitely consider it.
It's a pity that the family isn't more forthcoming as that is normally a first point of call.
Feel free to send me a PM if you want to discuss things more in private. It is up to you ...
Thank you so much Sylvia - I hope it's ok - I would love to take you up on your offer. Subject matter is a little sensitive to me
