Hi Francis,

You can access some divorce record indexes through each State's archives, but there are date restrictions. Here are some online Indexes:

QLD

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/indexes.asp

(scroll down to "Other indexes")

NSW

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes...

(scroll down to "Divorce")

VIC

http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide023/PR...

(scroll down to "Divorce cause books")

TAS

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=3

These are the only ones that I have on speed dial, but if you have a Google you will find records of other State archives.

If it was prior to 1954 then the newspapers usually have a mention

Hi Francis

The National Archives of Australia does not hold divorce records, as divorce matters come under State courts, rather than Commonwealth, jurisdiction.

Debra has provided links to a number of the State archival institutions. You can find the remainder of the State and Territory Government Archives on our fact sheet at naa.gov.au/collection/fact-sheets/fs02.aspx

Regards

Tonia
