I conducted a quick search on the passenger arrivals index, which is a listing of passengers arriving by ship in Fremantle and other Western Australian ports between 1921 and 1949; or arriving at Perth airport between 1944 and 1949. Many ships bound for the eastern Australian states passed through Fremantle ande the listings often include all other passengers who travelled further on the same ship and disembarked in other Australian or overseas ports.
I found a mention of one Antonio Conte who departed Liverpool in 1948-49:
|Passenger FAMILY NAME,
|Title||Alternative FAMILY NAME,
Port of embarkation
Port of disembarkation
Date of arrival
|Liverpool||Sydney||23 Apr 1949|
The National Archives holds many different records relating to the migration of people to Australia (see http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/migration/index.aspx). We may have records on your grandfather if he came to Australia as part of an assisted migration scheme, or if he became naturalised. You can submit a reference inquiry using the form at http://www.naa.gov.au/info/forms/imm-inquiry.aspx. A reference officer will search the records on your behalf and let you know what records they have been able to find.
First & foremost thankyou so much for your speedy reply.
Quite impressive & extremely efficient.
I found a document to do with identification which reads :
"Comvne Di Caramanico Pescara
I am wondering if the number can help me find the name of the ship and the date he travelled ?
Thanks again for your help Tonia.
Unfortunately, the document details you have appear to be for an Italian ID card. Those details aren't really useful for us, however, we do have a range of index cards and other registers in paper format that may help us to locate information about the ship and date he travelled - especially if he came as an assisted migrant or if he became naturalised.
I have submitted a reference inquiry on your behalf and a reference officer will check the paper records for you. You can expect a response from us within 30 days.
If after 30 days you still have not received a response, please contact:

Anna Koh emailed me today to say the Naturalisation correspondence record of Antonio Conte, barcode 12865633 are now publicly available.
I was unable to check whether it was my late grandfathers documents; so I requested a copy for $25.
I could not find a way of checking if I have the right person.
For eg. Birth Date 5 August 1905.
You will see in the NAA data base that just recently I payed $25 for another copy of Antonio Conte records and later discovered it was the wrong person as there is no way of checking if you have the right person.
Would it be at all possible for you to enter that barcode to verify his birth date.
And finally if it is the right person would his journey dates from Naples to Melbourne,as well as the name of the ship be on these papers as this is the critical information I am after.
If not could you please suggest ways of finding out this information.
I have just spoken with Anna and she will contact you shortly.
She confirms that the date of birth on this record is 5 August 1905 and will talk to you about getting another copy.
Just a quick thankyou for all your help.
Your assistance with my family research has been second to none.
Every request I sent you was responded quickly & accurately.
There is no way I would of found out the immigration details of my late Grandfather without your help.
Thanks so much.
Hello Again Tonia
Just when you thought you got rid of me.
My father Ennio Nicolino Conte born 15 November 1933 departed Naples, Italy on 6 October 1952 & arrived in Port Melbourne on 7 November 1952 on the "Castel Felice" (maiden voyage as a passenger ship).
I was wondering if you could submit a reference inquiry on my behalf as I dont have a lot of success when I do it.(plus I cannot find him when I do a record search & put in his details)
I am happy to pay the $25 to get a copy of my fathers records. ( Immigration, Naturalisation, etc)
PS. Even though I have purchased & recieved a copy of Antonio Conte's records I still cannot find his details when I do a record search on the NAA site ???
I have submitted a reference inquiry on your behalf. You can expect a response from the National Reference Service within 30 days. If after 30 days you haven't received a response, please contact:

You can view the database listing of Antonio Conte's record by doing a search in the Advanced search - Items screen (http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScre...)
Enter the barcode number 12865633 into the 'Item barcode' field and click on the search button. What you will see is just a listing of the record. This is like the reference to a book in a library catalogue, and it just gives the title of the file as it appears on the front cover of the file (ie 'Antonio Conte').
I was not able to see a digital copy of the record, which suggests that you only purchased a paper copy of the record. If there were a digital copy, you would see a link and icon in the green header bar just above the item details which you could click on to see the digital copy of the record (see for example barcode 6015998). If you did purchase a digital copy as well, it may still be in the queue to be loaded to the system. Let me know and I will look into it for you.
I have not recieved a response in regards to my fathers records yet.
However I have recieved records from NAA about my fathers sister Elvira Conte, but not as a digitised item.
My father and Elvira came to Australia together.
Her item barcode is 6568000.
I hope this helps in finding Ennio Nicolino Conte's immigration & naturalisation details.
