I was a member of this infantry unit in the 1960's and I am looking to make contact with others who may have also been in this unit.

I am keen to access any records, photos, etc

Does anyone have any information of photos?

Hi Michael

You might like to contact the Australian War Memorial.  They have an extensive collection of photographs and may have photos of your infantry unit.  They may also be able to provide you with more information about the unit.

The contact details for the AWM Research Centre are:

Thanks Tonia.

Are you saying that you don't have any records here?

Hi Michael

The National Archives of Australia is the archive of the Commonwealth of Australia, and so we do have records from the Department of Defence (and their earlier incarnations) relating to the defence services.  However, the kind of records in our collection for the period you are interested in tend to be policy records that document decisions made by the Government and other administrative records. They wouldn't really help you to look into the history of your particular unit.

If you are interested in getting a copy of your service record, you can write to the Department of Defence and they will provide you with a copy:

Central Army Records Office
GPO Box 393D
Melbourne VIC  3001

The Australian War Memorial also has Commonwealth records in their collection, and their holdings are the operational records such as unit diaries and records relating directly to defence campaigns.  This is the kind of information that will flesh out what happened to particular units. In addition, the Australian War Memorial have extensive collections of photographic, audio-visual, art and other kinds of records.  They also have really good personal records collections that have letters people wrote, diaries they kept, photos, personal mementos etc.  It is really worth at least giving them a call to see what to do to get access to them.

Your posting on this forum is searchable by search engines, and so if anyone is out there searching to connect with the 17th Battalion RNSWR, they will come across your posting and will have a way of getting in touch.

Best of luck in your search

Tonia

Hi Michael,
I just joined this sight and saw your email from 2012. Not sure if you have managed to find an answer to your query but i thought i would share some info with you.
2/17th Battalion RNSWR has a Facebook Group page you can join.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/156533441617/

There are 270 members in the group, someone may have been in the battalion in the 60's. I know there are a couple from the 70's.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Kind regards

That facebook group sounds good but he is not a member of facebook unfortunately

Hi Elizabeth,

I was wondering how your search has gone?

I found the contact details of the The Association of the 17th Infantry Battalions if you are still interested.

email: 17association@people.net.au

I met a few of the 17th Battalion guys on the Reserve Day Forces Parade, they are constantly looking for previous members to join the association.

I hope this helps.

kind regards
